Writer’s Tools – Getting Started

Grades 6-9

In this workshop, Barbara utilizes interactive exercises, readings, and discussion to invite students to investigate and practice using effective and educationally sound writing tools, techniques and strategies.  She invites students to write what they know and addresses the often-challenging question students face, “What should I write about?”  The program helps students create a routine and become “unstuck” when facing a blank page.

Re-vision – The Power of Choice
Grades 6-9

In this workshop, the author invites students to stare down and tackle the monster, “Revision” through examples of her own and other written works.  As a stand-alone program, or as part of a series, this workshop encourages students to focus on engaging the reader through sensory details, by being specific, employing the technique of “show-don’t tell”, and choosing powerful language. Interactive group sessions allow students to practice revision strategies.
